There is already an organization that is very effective at this:
Taproot Foundation (www.taprootfoundation.org). 

They assemble groups of volunteers to do service grants (projects) for non-profits. They are organized in SF, NYC, Boston, Chicago, and so on. 

Check them out -- they are really awesome and make a tremendous impact on the non-profits they help, and on the communities those non-profits serve.</description>
